PCOS
Hardcover book, 8 copies.
PCOS tells about a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the experiences of women who live with it. This condition has an incidence index of 10–15% and involves the formation of small cysts in the ovaries, presenting a wide range of symptoms. All of these manifestations find expression in a body that does not fit in the normative socio-medical understanding of ‘the female body’, a body that has been neglected for too much time in the blind patriarchal context of Western medicine and consumeristic culture.
PCOS is the result of different collaborations with people who are experiencing this condition. We explored this shared reality together through interviews, images, stories, drawings and conversations. In 2019 the first part of this project resulted in a book and exhibition as part of my BA graduation.
The general frame of this project is those black areas in our mind, wherein some overwhelming or seemingly insignificant issues dwell as we find ourselves unable to explain them to other people, even though it would be healthy for us to talk about them. Communication is a better way to handle such experiences. The starting point of the project concerns my lived experience of being diagnosed with PCOS.
